IEC 60947-1 is the standard which lays the rules applicable to low voltage switchgear and controlgear. The purpose of this standard is to coordinate the rules and regulations in order to obtain uniformity of requirements and tests. The product standard forming the series of IEC standard covering low voltage switchgear and control gear are:

S.No Standrad title
1 IEC 60947-1 Low voltage switchgear and controlgear
IEC 60947-2 Circuit Breaker
2 IEC 60947-3 Switches, disconnectors, switch-disconnectors and fuse-combination units
3 IEC 60947-4 Contactors and motor starter
4 IEC 60947-5 Control circuit devices and switching elements
6  IEC 60947-6 Multiple function equipment
8  IEC 60947-7 Ancillary equipment
9  IEC 60947-8 Control units for build in thermal protection (PTC ) for rotating electric machine.

This standard concerns, when required by the relevant product standard, to switchgear and controlgear herein after referred to as “equipment” and intended to be connected to circuits, the rated voltage of which does not exceed 1000 V a.c. or 1500 V d.c.

It does not relate to low-voltage switchgear and controlgear assemblies which are dealt with in IEC 60439.
